Geodic – 2016

Geodic is a study in perception, scale, and looking.

The subject is of blasted rock inside an old train tunnel that constitutes the westernmost part of the Kettle Valley Railway – a disused rail line that traverses southwestern British Columbia, and is now a park site.

The blasted and shattered rock, framed by the concrete supports of the vaulted tunnel roof are reminiscent of both massive, rudimentary, geodes, and the frenetic paintings of the American Abstract Expressionists of the 1940’s & 1950’s.

Time Passages:‘Through the Looking Glass’

An extension of the ‘Time Passages’ collection – ‘Through the looking Glass’ brings the camera inside – shooting through the windows of the ferry, and using its frame, to create a cinematic experience for the viewer. The image begs the viewer to look into it, and at it, as the outside’ image through the window is an expression of the exterior surroundings, while the window itself is its own phenomenon, adding a texture of sea mist, scratches, and patina to the view. The frames of the window are reminiscent of a classic triptych / diptych.

‘Time Passages’ is a continuing series of long-exposure photos taken from the decks of passenger ferries in motion as they pass along their routes. The photos evoke memory, both individual, and societal, of places visited in the past. For the individual, the image is like a fuzzy memory, for the group, the image is akin to a superimposition of perceptions. For me, it is the ability to paint with the the camera.

There is no Photoshop here. All images are the original, in-camera image.

The Salton Sea – a paradox of subtle beauty and forsaken dreams. Sublime sunsets, and exquisite decrepitude.
